Amaranth – a healthy food that will win 2017 is gaining even more and more fame these days as it’s considered to be the new superfood. Here are some things you should know about it.
Don’t get us wrong, will will always recommend the quinoa, but there’s a new superfood that will win over the plates of 2017. The amaranth is naturally gluten free, it contains a high protein grain and just like the quinoa, it was a crucial part of the ancient Aztecs’ diet. They definitely knew how to eat healthy!
What is amaranth?
Same as the quinoa, the amaranth is a dried seed. The Aztecs were the first who cultivated the pink flowering plant about 8.000 years ago and know it grows all over the world in countries such as China, Peru, Nigeria and Mexico. Because it’s naturally gluten free, the amaranth is great for a good and healthy breakfast – when it’s boiled, it gets a look similar to a mash, so it’s easy to prepare, as well to consume.
When we say superfood, we really mean it. The list of all the benefits that amaranth has is huge, but here are some that will certainly catch your attention:
- a great source of calcium
- studies have shown that it can decrease cholesterol
- a complete protein, it contains all the essential amino acids
- it contains 9 grams of proteins in one portion, as opposed to the 8 grams in the quinoa
How do you eat it?
The amaranth is a great choice for your first meal of the day, but there are many creative ways it can be served. If you’re a fan of quinoa, than you can use amaranth in the same recipes. On the other side, you can replace rice with the amaranth and get an even healthier meal. Just be creative with it!
